I really wanted to test XyliMelts for dry mouth. I had read many positive reviews of this product on the Internet, where it is described in some cases as almost miraculous.
For those who are not familiar with them, XyliMelts are discs (a little thick in my opinion) that stick to the gums and dissolve over a number of hours, increasing saliva, moisturizing the mouth, and leaving a pleasant taste.
In Spain, there is not much variety of dry mouth specific products. Usually, only three or maybe four products can be found at pharmacies (mouthwash, toothpaste and with any luck, spray). That is why I finally had to buy XyliMelts on an online shop from the UK.
When I received XyliMelts I was very excited, but I tried not to get swept up by the euphoria and I decided to use the product for a few days before giving my opinion.
Soon I will write a more detailed review of this product, but for the moment here are my first impressions after a week of nightly XyliMelts use (when dry mouth bothers me the most).
Night 1: Unusual sensation
Although XyliMelts go completely unnoticed outwardly, the discs are not exactly flat. They are about the thickness of an aspirin and may be a bit uncomfortable at the beginning.
The first night I had a hard time falling asleep due to the weird sensation of having something stuck in my gums.
Restless, I woke up several times during the night to check if the disc had moved or if I had swallowed it… None of that happened, the disc was firmly stuck to my gums and it dissolved throughout the night. I noticed that in my case, the disc lasts between 6 and 7 hours.
I had no thirst or feeling of dry mouth at any time during the night.
Night 2: Good omens
This evening, I dined out and had a few beers. In other circumstances, I would have felt that my mouth was very dry during the night, getting up several times to drink water. In the morning, my tongue would feel like old leather and I would have a moderate sore throat.
Just like the night before, I struggled to sleep with the disc inside my mouth and I woke up several times.
However, thanks to XyliMelts, my mouth felt moisturized all night long. If I woke up, it was because I felt the peculiar sensation, but not due to the need to drink water (which I did not do even once).
In the morning my mouth and my tongue were moisturized, so even though I didn’t have a restful sleep I was very pleased with XyliMelts.
Night 3: More natural
I was getting used to placing the disc on my gums correctly. The disc should be slightly pressed on the gums for 10 seconds. If you press too hard, the disc slips.
I had a hard time falling asleep again and I woke up many times during the night.
In the morning, my mouth, my tongue and my throat were fresh, hydrated and flexible. I have almost forgotten about the scratchy feeling I usually got in my throat in the morning.
Night 4: Easy-peasy
This time I placed the disc on my gums without any problem!
However, I slept poorly again. I found myself unable to manage the strange body sensation.
At this point, I recognized that I was about to give up and stop using XyliMelts, even though the discs worked perfectly and my mouth was moisturized and comfortable all night long. However, I committed myself to using XyliMelts for a week before writing about it, so I decided to continue with the product for a few more nights.
Night 5: No interruptions
It took me a while to fall asleep (less than previous nights) but when I fell asleep I did not wake up once during the night. Was I getting used to the discs?
When I got up, my mouth was hydrated despite the heavy dinner I had the previous night. XyliMelts worked effectively against the extra dryness caused by this “xerostomic” (as I’d described it) dinner.
Night 6: Like a log
For the first time in the entire week I fell asleep in a few minutes. I slept nine hours straight without getting up to drink water. It was surprising, since I had not slept so many hours non-stop in years!
After 9 hours, the disc had disappeared and my mouth began to feel dry and cracked.
Night 7: To be continued?
The last night, I had a hard time falling asleep again but I didn’t wake up during the night. In the morning my mouth was fresh and moist.
In the next article, I will complete a more thorough review of the product, but I must admit that I am very satisfied with the results of XyliMelts.
Generally, I do not sleep well since I suffer from xerostomia. XyliMelts has been a pleasant surprise because it works very well when it comes to combatting dry mouth at night.
I think that in my case, XyliMelts, apart from improving dry mouth, can also help me sleep better. This was only once I finally got used to the sensation of the disc inside my mouth, of course.
Worst of all:
It’s hard to get used to sleeping with the discs. However, I think that the weird sensation can be totally overcome over time.
Best of all:
I do not need to get up every few hours to drink water, and I don’t have any feeling of dry mouth or sore throat in the morning. So, bye bye dry mouth at night.
Even on nights when I dined out or consumed alcohol, XyliMelts worked well and it is effective against dry mouth.
Am I going to continue using XyliMelts?
Yes, no doubt. But I will try to buy them in Spain or somewhere with lower shipping costs.
And you, did you know about XyliMelts? Do you use it? What do you think about this product?
