5 tips to relieve dry mouth during pregnancy

By Leave a Comment

Dry mouth during pregnancy is one of the most common oral disorders that occurs as a result of the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy. Dry mouth can also affect the throat. Having a dry feeling in the mouth and throat during pregnancy is very common but temporary and will disappear when the pregnancy is over.

Besides the lack of saliva, pregnancy can trigger, directly and indirectly, other oral problems such as gum infections (pregnancy gingivitis), tooth sensitivity and increased caries risk. Relieving dry mouth can help prevent the rest of mouth problems.

During pregnancy the same general tips for relieving dry mouth can be applied, but here are five more specific tips to keep in mind during gestation.

1) Drink more water

Women should drink more water during pregnancy. On the one hand, the adequate hydration favors blood circulation and helps women deal with the increase in energy expenditure during gestation. On the other hand, it must be taken in consideration that water is essential for the formation of amniotic fluid and the fetal development. In addition, drinking more water decreases the feeling of dry mouth and burning throat.
If you think that drinking so much water is boring, try to drink infusions, but not too hot not to irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth.

2) Take care of your sleeping posture

Sleeping is very important for health. During pregnancy, many changes in blood circulation occur. Increased blood flow often causes nasal congestion and breathing problems. This, coupled with weight gain, can make many pregnant women to be short of breath and breath through the mouth especially at night, which increases dry mouth and throat discomfort. Try sleeping on your side, with a high pillow (or pillows) under the upper body to keep your head elevated.

3) Use a humidifier at night

If you notice dry mouth at night, do not hesitate to use a humidifier. This will relieve the discomfort of both dry mouth and dry throat and will help you to rest better.

4) Use some specific products for dry mouth in your daily oral hygiene

Why not? They are not harmful to health (on the contrary), are not difficult to find or excessively expensive and will also help keep your mouth healthy during pregnancy.

Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol because they irritate the mucous membranes and can cause more dryness.

5) Try Xylimelts

I do not like advertising products but Xylimelts is a “super product”. It has been a great discovery for me and it has greatly relieved my dry mouth at night. Xylimelts are small discs that stick to the gum and they melt over the hours keeping the mouth moisturized. It can be used during pregnancy without any problem.
Below I will leave the Amazon link where I found this product at the best price.
